Brainstorming Ideas on Sustenance

Progress of animation

Cycle of food- the different colours represent all the different people that food goes through in the process.

Words generated from our reading in design.  My chosen word is PERFORMATIVITY.  I have to incorporate this into my design.

Beginning A1 Animation

I started my exploration drawings of sustenance on the A1 sheet.  I am interested in the concept of the process of the production of food and where it originates from.  We don't realise how many people and how large the process is in order to produce the food we eat.

Traditional ways of producing and processing food evolved when we developed new technologies.

Sustenance - Workshop 2

For these next two weeks, the topic we are focusing on is sustenance.
Sustenance-The maintaining something or someone.  Something that keeps us going.
Eg. water/food, shelter, energy, motivation, goals, cleaning, family/friends, love etc.

I want to focus on an aspect most important physically to us all in order to survive and to keep us going which is food.  It is something we are surrounded by and have access to everyday and we have now come to take it for granted.

Peer Review 1

For today's first crit, we did something different which is what will be happening for every secondd week crit that we have. Instead of presenting our final ideas and models to our tutors we are reviewing three peers from a different group, (doing the workshop which we will be doing next) therefore by reviewing their work we can get an idea about what the workshop is all about and we can get advice on what to do or what not to do.

This week I reviewed the group doing the A1 Animation Workshop.  These are the blog addresses below.
Simon Arms - www.armsarchdesign.blogspot.com
Simon created a sleeping which was situated on top of an already existing building.  He wanted to go with the idea of being able to see the stars when sleeping and waking up.  This process has been shown through a few perspective drawings showing the stars and sky above.

Paul Yoon - http://archdes101.tumblr.com
He wanted to go with the idea of waking up in a place which makes him feel out of place and confused which is not something that we would usually wake up to. Therefore he has placed it in a carpark on Beach Rd where one would wake up in a capsule disoriented in a dark place.  The animation was not one which was expected.  The length of the clip was approximately 4minutes long however the shot of the animation was only 15seconds.  It was a quick video which raced around the A1 page which went with the idea of a person being disoriented.

Rachael Anne Russel - http://rachaelarch.blogspot.com/
Rachel used different techniques in her animation such as collage (cut outs of textured wood) as well as thread.  Rachael built in between two already existing buildings and went with the idea of creating one space in which people could come together as a common space.  The animation included the use of people within the space to communicate the idea of interactions between people in the common space.  She explored a lot of different ideas in order to come to her final plans of the space in between the two buildings

When using Adobe Aftereffects, the most important things to remember are to use a low resolution when taking photos while drawing otherwise the file will be very large and will take a long time to import into a place like Youtube to be publicly viewed and also that all files are numbered in order, otherwise if there are gaps, the video will not be smooth and continuous.

Laser Cut Model

Instead of having two different forms, one on the outside made of wood representing the hard concrete and the other, the cardboard form resembling water, I have intertwined the two so that there is a connection between them.  The red paper goes through the wood vertically to show that although the wood encapsulates the water, the water is not restricted and retained, it is still able to be free for movement.

At first I wanted to have the light resting on a side table but I have decided to suspend the light with elastics so that it oscillates vertically.  The ripples created in the water at the site is often also caused by the interference of oscillations so I wanted to portray this.

Model Assemblage

These are the pieces which were laser cut for my light.

The pieces cut from MDF will resemble the hard concrete which en-capsules the water.  To show the contrast of the water which is soft and in comparison to the concrete, I want to use cardboard so that it can easily be shaped. I have chosen to use red cardboard as it emphasizes the contrast and when waking up, I want to wake up in a warm environment therefore the red adds to the warmth.

I wanted to create movement and fluidity especially in the cardboard because i wanted the fluid movement to resemble the movement of the water that was in the site.
